Reading Books
Please can reading books and key rings be brought to school everyday. We will endeavor to change your child's books once a week but will take every opportunity to hear them read. We would really appreciate it if you could support you child by listening to them read or practise their letter sounds at home a few times a week. Please jot a few notes in your child's reading record book telling us how much they have read, whether they enjoyed the story and if they struggled to sound out or remember tricky words. To support your child you could ask them a few questions (such as what will happen next, why an event happened or how a character feels) throughout the book to encourage comprehension.
Supporting Your Child at Home
At Picknalls we teach synthetic phonics which means that we teach children the sounds that letters make and how to blend them together to make words when reading. This also helps with spelling and writing as children have to break down the spoken word into the sounds they can hear. You can help your child by using the Espresso videos below or Phonicsfun.co.uk.
To help your child's Mathematics development we recommend playing board games, dominoes, snakes and ladders etc. For more ideas please download this booklet or look at our Mathematics page.
Please Bring to School...
PE
We do PE on Thursdays and your child will need a named pair of shorts and a named t-shirt. You can leave these in school and we will send them home every half term to be washed.
Woods
Reception visits the woodland every Wednesday, whatever the weather. Please ensure your child has wellies and warm clothing for this.
Outdoor Play
We have a canopy covering our outdoor area which means that our pupils can access outdoor play all year round. However pupils do require warm clothing throughout the week in order to do so.
Water Bottles
We encourage our pupils to re-hydrate themselves throughout the day. Please equip your child with a named bottle filled with water only (no juice, squash or fizzy drinks please). We will send these home every day to be washed.
Milk
Every child under 5 years old receives free milk every day. If you would like to purchase milk for your 5 year old you can at a cost of 20p per day. Please pay at the office.
